Q. Do I need to make an appointment to have my blood drawn at PrimeCare?
A. No. Appointments are not necessary. It is recommended that you bring a completed test requisition form from your healthcare provider and a copy of your medical insurance card in order to expedite your visit. Our laboratory is busiest between 7 and 10 in the morning because that is when patients who are required to fast for testing usually arrive. Your wait will usually be shorter after 10am, so you may wish to come in after 10am if you are able.

Q. Why do I have to fast for my test?
A. You may be required to fast before having a blood test. This is because certain test values change following the digestion of food. For more information click here (link to Fasting Instruction page).

Q. Can PrimeCare’s laboratory tell me how much I can expect to pay for my tests?
A. The price you pay for tests performed by PrimeCare may be dependent on several variables, such as: 1) your insurance plan coverage of lab tests; 2) your healthcare provider's agreement with PrimeCare Medical Center (Cigna will not cover lab services, for example); and 3) your age: if you are 65+, Medicare will not pay for some tests that your doctor considers important (due to frequency of testing, for example).

Q. How long does it take to receive test results?
A. Depending on the test performed, most tests are completed and reported to your ordering healthcare provider within 24-48 hours of receiving the sample for testing. Certain tests take several days to weeks. Results are sent directly to the ordering healthcare professional. Please ask your healthcare provider to contact you when your test results have been received.

Q. How can I receive a copy of my test results?
A. If you need to receive a copy of your test results, please contact your doctor or their medical assistant to request that your results be sent to you.

Q. Can PrimeCare laboratory help me interpret my results?
A. Please address questions related to interpretation of your test results to your personal healthcare provider. Your doctor will interpret your laboratory test results (that is, determine their meaning) in conjunction with information about your medical history, physical examination, and other test results, and provide you with medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

Q. Why has my doctor requested this test?
A. Your doctor may order a lab test for one or more of the following reasons.

• To confirm a suspected diagnosis - e.g., glucose to confirm diabetes mellitus.
• To exclude a diagnosis - e.g., a negative urine culture rules out bladder and kidney bacterial infection.
• To check that treatment is working effectively - e.g., increasing hemoglobin level shows that anemia is responding to treatment with iron pills.
• To monitor prescription drug levels - e.g.,  digoxin level to check that the amount of digoxin (a heart drug) is at the appropriate level to work effectively.
• To screen for a treatable condition - e.g., Pap smear in women to detect early or pre-cancer of the cervix.
